Policy Statement

We value:
  • Your privacy
  • Your knowledge, skills, and experience
  • Your part in the process of teaching and learning

We also value:
  • Connecting learners with other learners who solve problems
  • Connecting learners with resources that solve problems

Our intent:
We envision that all those who use the ProfilerPRO resources are part of a broad network of solutions for educators. ProfilerPRO is designed to sustain a vibrant learning community supporting collaboration, communication, and resource sharing. So while you are finding resources to help you, you will also find colleagues who are dealing with the same issues and developing their own solutions. This network becomes stronger as we get to know one another, develop a shared vision, create jointly, and help solve problems. It is only through your willingness to share your skills and expertise, and to connect with others in your organization, that the network of learning and support available through ProfilerPRO has value.

Children's Online Privacy Protection

ProfilerPRO, a project of the U.S. Department of Education, is committed to protecting the privacy of children. There are a number of federal statutes that protect the privacy rights of students and their families.

Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)

The primary goals of this act are to place parents in control over what online information is collected from children under the age of 13, and to ensure that any information collected is kept private and confidential. A more detailed explanation of COPPA is available at .

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA or The Buckley Amendment)

This federal law protects the privacy of students' educational records. A more detailed explanation of FERPA is available at http://www.ed.gov/offices/OM/fpco/ferparegs.html and the law in its entirety can be read by entering the following information at the U.S. Code Search page at http://law2.house.gov/usc.htm -- Title 20 , Section 1232g.

Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA or The Hatch Amendment)

The goals of the PPRA are to give parents the right to inspect and consent to any materials used in connection with a survey given to students, and to place limits on the types of information which can be gathered by that survey. More information on PPRA can be found at http://nces.ed.gov/pubs97/p97527/EXH_2_2.HTM, and the law can be read in its entirety by entering the following information at the U.S. Code Search page at http://law2.house.gov/usc.htm -- Title 20, Section 1232h.

In order to maintain compliance with these federal statutes, ProfilerPRO has adopted the following policies regarding the registration of students for the use of the ProfilerPRO tool:

  • ProfilerPRO does not support the use of the ProfilerPRO tool to collect survey data from any child under the age of 13. We, therefore, do not knowingly allow the registration of any child under the age of 13 into our user database.

  • Students 13 and over may register to use the ProfilerPRO tool. As ProfilerPRO may be used as a collaborative tool in which survey results are shared among the peer group, it is required that any school, district, or individual teacher who wishes to use ProfilerPRO with students 13-18 obtain and hold written parental permission prior to the registration of these students (students who have reached 18 years of age and are attending a postsecondary institution are eligible to provide their own consent). This parental permission form should include the following information:

    • consent for the registration of the student with an on-line collaboration tool in which the student's name, e-mail address and survey responses may be shared with his/her peer group;
    • a copy of the entire survey and all accompanying instructional materials to be used in conjunction with that survey;
    • how that data generated by the survey will be used;
    • how the parent can request the removal of the student's data.

Copyright Policy

ProfilerPRO will not knowingly publish any survey, in part or in whole, which has been previously published in any format without obtaining express written permission from the author or copyright holder.
